Branch Treasurer

Main Purpose Of Role

  • As part of the Branch Leadership Team, monitor the assets of the branch, support the Leadership Team on financial matters and report to the Branch Leadership Team and Samaritans Central Charity at regular intervals about the financial health of the branch.  

Position And Support In Organisation

  • Accountable to: Branch Director.
  • Works within a team of: Branch Leadership team.   

Key Responsibilities

  • To be part of the Leadership Team and provide support and advice in relation to financial matters. 
  • To manage the branch’s finances. 
  • To oversee and present budgets, accounts and financial statements. 
  • To ensure that proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with good governance, legal and regulatory requirements. 
  • To be instrumental in the development and implementation of financial, reserves and investment policies. 
  • To attend meetings and report on the branch’s financial position as and when required. 
  • To prepare an annual financial statement for Samaritans Central Charity. 
  • To ensure income and expenditure is processed in line with branch policies and procedures. 
  • Acting as a signatory on cheques (including any electronic transactions) and any applications for funds. 
  • To oversee the payment of volunteer expenses as agreed by the Leadership Team. 
  • To liaise with the branch’s bankers as/when required. 

 Note: The Branch Treasurer does not make the decision about where money is spent.  The Director and Branch Leadership Team authorises this. 

Qualities And Experience

  • The branch Treasurer will, ideally, have experience of financial administration, financial management and of managing a budget. 

Appointment And Timescales

  • Appointments are until the next branch Annual General Meeting(AGM) for affiliate branches and the next Annual Branch Meeting (ABM) for SCC branches.   
  • Post holders may be re-elected for additional terms as long as they have not served for more than six consecutive years at the point of re-election. 
  • Post holders are Trustees.  

Location, Travel And Expenses

  • Based at the branch
  • All out of pocket expenses related to the role will be reimbursed by the branch in line with the relevant branch expenses policy.

Recruitment And Selection Process

  • At every AGM the elected members of the Leadership team (including the Treasurer) step down and an election is held to appoint new members. 
  • Persons stepping down may stand for reappointment provided that they have not served for more than six consecutive years.
